Iran and Russia’s indication to stop purchasing Turkmen oil and increase domestic production will cause Turkmenistan to seek other potential oil buyers and avoid Chinese market dependency. While Turkmenistan currently owns the fourth-largest gas reserves in the world, the country’s inability to construct adequate pipeline infrastructure forces it to depend on the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline build by China. Turkmenistan hopes to gain India and Pakistan as oil buyers and are attempting to construct a pipeline, TAPI, via Afghanistan. Source: EurasiaNet
