June 16th, 2014 A Chinese court in Xinjiang Autonomous Province sentenced three men to death and five others to jail, all charged with participating in a terrorist group that attacked Tian'anmen Square in October 2013. Evidence against the accused claimed that they formed the group in 2011 and began accumulating explosives and firearms in 2012. This heavy-handed verdict may result in greater tensions amongst the Uyghur people, who are already feeling threatened by Han Chinese immigration into Xinjiang. This will lead to possible further repression from the Chinese government for fear of a Uyghur backlash.
