UN Summit of the Future

In a world increasingly divided by conflicts, climate crises, and digital inequalities, the United Nations (UN) convened its Summit of the Future in New York September 22-23, 2024, where global leaders, youth advocates, and key stakeholders came together to forge a bold new pact aimed at transforming international governance and securing a sustainable, just, and peaceful future for all. 

A Global Pact for the Future

Central to the Summit’s agenda was the adoption of the “Pact for the Future,” a comprehensive outcome document that encapsulates the collective commitments of UN Member States to address both immediate crises and long-term global challenges. The Pact, which was adopted by consensus, outlines five key areas of focus: sustainable development, international peace and security, science and technology, youth engagement, and global governance reform.

“This Pact represents our collective pledge to not only address the crises we face today but to lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order for all peoples and nations,” said H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, during his opening remarks.

Addressing the Challenges of the 21st Century

The Summit underscored the need for deep reforms in global institutions, many of which were established in the mid-20th century and are now becoming increasingly inadequate for the complexities of the modern world. UN Secretary-General António Guterres set the tone with a stark message: “Our world is heading off the rails – and we need tough decisions to get back on track.”

Guterres highlighted a litany of challenges, from escalating conflicts and the climate crisis to the digital divide and socioeconomic inequalities. He called for decisive action, including reforms to the composition and working methods of the United Nations Security Council to better reflect today’s geopolitical realities, and a reimagining of the global financial system to support sustainable development and combat rising debt burdens in developing countries.

A Digital Compact for All

One of the most significant outcomes of the Summit was the agreement on a Global Digital Compact, designed to harness the benefits of digital technologies while safeguarding human rights and preventing misuse. The Compact will establish global standards for digital governance, including the ethical use of artificial intelligence and efforts to bridge the digital divide that leaves millions without access to basic digital infrastructure.

“The Global Digital Compact is a crucial step in ensuring that technology serves the common good of all humanity, rather than exacerbating existing inequalities,” said Guterres.

Voices of the Future

Youth engagement was a prominent theme throughout the Summit, with young leaders from around the world taking center stage. Ghanim Al-Muftah, a youth representative from Qatar, delivered an impassioned speech highlighting the importance of inclusivity and the role of young people in shaping the future.

“As a person with a disability, I have learned that true progress comes not from overcoming personal challenges alone, but from how we as a society embrace each other’s differences,” Al-Muftah told the assembly. His message resonated with many, emphasizing that inclusivity should be a fundamental right, not a luxury.

Monicah Malith, a refugee from South Sudan, also addressed the Summit, sharing her journey from a refugee camp in Kenya to student leadership and advocacy roles. She called on world leaders to prioritize peace and security to prevent future generations from experiencing the hardships of displacement.

“Our efforts must center peace and security so no one is ever forced to leave home,” Malith urged.

A Call for Global Action

The Summit concluded with a renewed call for global action, with leaders emphasizing the need to turn words into deeds. The commitments made during the Summit, particularly those enshrined in the Pact for the Future, will require concerted effort and international cooperation to implement effectively.

Guterres, in his closing remarks, challenged the international community: “We stand and fall not by adopting agreements, but by our actions and their impact on the lives of the people we serve. Now, let’s get to work.”
